MANY HATS
I would like to thank my orthopaedic colleagues at KCOI for the vote of confidence. Effective January 1st, I have been appointed Chief Medical Officer of the Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute.
Whether you see me wearing my teaching hat, my executive hat, my urgent care director’s hat or my surgical cap, I’m striving to provide the best care for my patients, the future patients of our surgeons in training and for all KCOI patients.
I’m excited to participate in hospital leadership, to continue the legacy of our first CEO, Dr. Charlie Rhoades, and to help steer KCOI into the future.
We have great plans as we continue to provide the best orthopaedic care for our patients
As always, it remains an honor and a privilege to serve.
KCOI. Best Ortho in KC. Hands down.

WHERE IT STARTED
Dr. Peer began his medical journey as a patient when he tore his ACL while racing for a college ski team in Vermont. He subsequently redirected his career towards science and medicine. He transferred to Virginia Tech and obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degrees. He pursued ongoing training while studying at the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences at the National Institutes of Health and was awarded a two-year research fellowship at the National Cancer Institute with Dr. Michael Sporn in the Laboratory of Chemoprevention. Dr. Peer then accompanied Dr. Sporn to move their lab to Dartmouth Medical School where he continued research on cancer chemoprevention.
Dr. Peer then went on to obtain his medical education at Georgetown Medical School where he was class Vice President. He obtained his surgical residency at the University of New Mexico and in his senior year was Chief resident on the Ortho Trauma service in one of the busiest trauma units in the country. At that time Dr. Peer and his family moved to Kansas City and worked as a fellow with the Sports Service at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute. He was assistant to the Head Team Physician for the Kansas City Chiefs during that year.
EXPERIENCED IN SPORTS MEDICINE
Dr. Peer then proceeded into his first practice specializing in sports medicine and joint replacement. He continued on as a consultant for the Kansas City Chiefs until 2015. He also consulted with ski patrol, multiple college sports teams and was appointed head team physician to the Michigan Tech Division I Hockey Team while continuing consulting work with the Chiefs.
Currently, Dr. Peer has returned to Kansas City with a practice focused on Sports Medicine injuries to the knee and shoulder as well as joint replacement of knees and shoulders. In additional Dr. Peer performs complex revision reconstruction and replaces failed, broken and infected total knees.
Despite a wealth of knowledge and experience with complex knee and shoulder problems, Dr. Peer still enjoys helping patients with understanding the nature of their problem and outlining the rational approaches and strategies for management. He can provide an experienced perspective into the nature of your knee or shoulder problem.
Dr. Peer is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the New England Shoulder and Elbow Society, the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and has won the Robert Hayes Academic Achievement Award, the Franklin Dickson Award, and as a resident he also won the Staff Leadership Award and Resident Instructor of the Year Award. He teaches arthroscopic surgery techniques at the Orthopaedic Learning Center at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' headquarters in Chicago and has served on the Evaluations Committee of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons writing the exam questions for other orthopaedic surgeons. He is Associate Director for the UMKC Orthopaedic Sports Medicine fellowship, he is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at the Executive Committee of the Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute and serves on the Executive Committee and the Medical Director for it's Ortho Urgent Care. He is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and has a Sub-Specialty Certificate in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.
